Butler Trail at Lady Bird Lake
An easy bridge from road running: soft crushed granite, flat, easy to navigate and full of other runners. Bridges let you choose loop lengths.
- Difficulty
- Easiest
- Surface
- Crushed granite, some boardwalk and pavement
- Shade
- Partial; lots of sun midday
- Best for
- Your very first “off-road” miles
Know before you go
- Very busy on weekend mornings. Run on the right and pass on the left with a friendly “on your left.”
- Water fountains are available at points around the loop, but carry water in summer.
- Use the bridges to make shorter loops while you build up.
Your first run here
Pick a short bridge-to-bridge loop and practice running relaxed on loose gravel with short, quick steps.
Why start here
If you are coming from the road, this is the gentlest possible introduction to off-road running. The crushed granite is forgiving, the route is easy to follow and you are never far from help. It is the ideal place to learn to relax on a slightly loose surface before you take on rocks and roots.
How to build a first run
Pick a bridge-to-bridge loop that fits your fitness and use the bridges as bail-out points. A good first goal is 25 to 30 minutes of easy run-walk. Try 3 minutes running, 1 minute walking, and keep your steps short and light on the gravel.
A sample 30-minute workout
- Walk 5 minutes to warm up.
- Run 3 minutes easy, walk 1 minute. Repeat 5 times.
- Walk 3 to 5 minutes to cool down.
- Stretch calves, hips and hamstrings.
Timing and crowds
Weekend mornings and evenings get very busy with walkers, runners, strollers and dogs. If you want space, try a weekday early morning. Midday in summer is hot and much of the trail is exposed. In the warm months, go at sunrise or in the evening.
Etiquette
Keep to the right, pass on the left with a friendly “on your left,” and do not run three abreast. Slow down on bridges and near boardwalks, which can be slippery when wet.
Common beginner mistakes
- Going too fast because the surface is easy. Keep the effort conversational.
- Skipping water because “it is only 30 minutes.” In summer, bring some.
- Wearing headphones so loud you cannot hear cyclists.
When you are ready for more
Once 40 minutes feels comfortable, move on to a gentle dirt trail such as Circle C, then step up to the Greenbelt for your first rocky miles.

Conditions change. Check official City of Austin park and trail updates before you go, and never cross flooded water. Trail running carries inherent risk; run within your ability.
